Correspondent Musicologist

Musicologist born in Ecuador, she settled since 1962 in Havana, where she studied under Argeliers León, at Instituto Superior de Arte (Superior Art Institute).

Between 1980 and 1996 she worked in the Fundamental Research Department of the Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo de la Música Cubana (Center for the Research and Development of Cuban Music). She has made a wide field work throughout all the Cuban geography, putting an emphasis in the studies about the traditional popular culture, which gave her material for a number articles and anthological recordings and made her deserve the Premio EGREM (EGREM Award) in 1981. In 1986 she was awarded the Premio de Musicología Casa de las Américas (House of the Americas Musicology Award), for her book “Presencia arará en la música folklórica de Matanzas” (Arará’s presence in folk music of Matanzas).

In 1987 she went to Budapest, Hungary for a stay at the Musical Sciences Intitute “Bela Bartok”. Between 1991 and 1996 she was author of a number of entries for the Spanish and Hispano-American Music Dictionary.

She is Titular Professor in the Musicology Department of Instituto Superior de Arte (Superior Art Institute).

In 1996 she was appointed Director of the Musicology Department of the Casa de las Americas (America’s House) and of the Boletín Música (Music Bulletin) of that prestigious institution, which is one of the most important specialized publications in Spanish speaking countries.

She is member of the Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (National Union of Writters and Artists of Cuba) – UNEAC, by its acronym in Spanish – and in 2002 the Ministerio de Cultura (Culture Ministry) of Cuba granted her the honor Distinction for the National Culture.
