Alfredo del Monaco was born in Caracas in 1.938. He studied piano and composition with Moisés Moleiro and Primo Casale in Venezuela and later at Columbia University where he received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1.974. He also has degree in Law from the U.C.A.B. University in Caracas. Between the years 1.969 and 1.975, Del Monaco lived in New York and worked at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, where he experimented extensively in electronic music. During this period he composed instrumental, electroacustic, and mixed compositions, influenced by avant-garde movements such as constructivism, phonetic music, agitprop, and conceptual music.

His compositions have been premiered at numerous festivals around the world such as Berlin (1.968), The Columbia-Princeton Tenth Anniversary Festival (1.970), Venice Biennale (1.971), Brussels Electroacustic Music Festival (1.971), Festival de las Américas y España (Madrid, 1.970 , 1.973), the Interamerican Music Festivals of Washington D.C. (1.974, 1.980), the International Society for Contemporary Music (I.S.C.M., 1.976, 1.993, 1.995), Perpignan ( France,1.993), also at festivals in Cuba, Chile, Mexico, Brasil, Caracas, etc. as well as concerts and broadcasts in both Europe and America.

Distinguished contemporary music groups have performed his works such as The Philadelphia Composers Forum; American Symphony Chamber Orchestra; Solars Vortices (France); Orchestra of Our Time (N.Y.C.); Societé de Musique Contemporaine du Quebec (Canada); Monday Evening Concerts (Los Angeles); RAI Symphony Orchestra (Rome); Aventure (Germany); Contemporary Music forum of Washington; American Composers Orchestra (N.Y.C.); Cikada Ensemble (Oslo). In 1.968 he founded the I.S.C.M. Venezuelan branch. He also pioneered electronic music in Venezuela at the former Estudio de Fonología Musical, in 1.966. In 1.968 he was awarded the National Composition Prize of Music.

Some of his compositions are available on records from Composers Recordings Inc. (CRI), New York. In Venezuela from Pro-Musica and Supravox Records; and recently from Airó-Music, CD 1993, Caracas, and Jeunesse Musicales de Venezuela. (1.995). Also on the Attaca label from Amsterdam.

In 1.999 he received the National Prize of Music of Venezuela.
Founding Member and Fellow of the Colegio de Compositores Latinoamericanos de Musica de Arte (Mexico, 1.999).
For his trajectory he was given the Tomas Luis de Victoria Prize (Spain, 2002).
